He was very active in sports at a senior competitive level in judo (inter provincial) badminton, cricket, rugby and football until he left with an injury at the end of his University career.
He did military compulsive national service in 1969 which included service in the then Rhodesia as a medical officer. He was the only doctor for the civilian population for about a 200 km radius.
He continued with citizen force training for a further 30 years with very extensive exposure to senior courses ultimately in leadership management and planning then was made Honorary Life Vice President of the Reserve Force Council in the Ministry of Defense.
He achieved his Private Pilot’s License in 1968 and travelled extensively over much of remote South Africa and southern Africa (Namibia, Angola, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Zambia, Mozambique and its islands) including light flying license and an open license in aviation radio use.
He is a life member of the Photographic Society of South Africa.
He has been active in civic affairs and the community police forum (CPF) for decades much as a Chairman.
Besides photography, his hobby is travelling mainly to world heritage sites and nature and wildlife areas. He has travelled very extensively in Spain and down the main rivers of Europe.
He has been a representative with the Eisenhower Foundation at a very senior level in delegations to Jordan, Bhutan and China.
He holds a number of certificates and diplomas in Project Management and Business science, especially Health Care Management. He has been a director of a number of companies.
He has done three one-year courses in Statistics and Health Statistics at BSc Level.
